WINE RATINGS AND REVIEWS
In their September, 2010 issue, Seattle Met "Top 100 Washington Wines" lists Milbrandt Vineyards Sentinel Northridge Red Wine, Wahluke Slope 2007, 92 points | Each bottle of Milbrandt Vineyards wine bears a simple but telling quote from brothers Butch and Jerry Milbrandt. "Individually we are just Butch and Jerry. But when we are working together we are like one really talented person." The Milbrandts planted their first vineyard 13 years ago; they now farm 13 different sites across a staggering 1,600 acres.
Intense aromatics of black cherry, spice, light chocolate, and earth. Opulent on the palate with rich, complex fruit flavors accented by silky oak. Capped off by a long finish. A good deal of oak influence. 63 percent cabernet sauvignon, 25 percent merlot, 6 percent petit verdot, 6 percent malbec. Aged 14 months in Eastern European, French, and American oak (100 percent new). 14.3 percent alcohol. 400 cases produced
Seattle Met "Top 100 Washington Wines" also lists Saviah Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley 2007, 91 points | Walla Walla's Saviah Cellars produces a lineup of high-quality wines that consistently outperform the other bottles in their price class. Here winemaker Richard Funk takes fruit from three of Walla Walla's best vineyards (Pepper Bridge, Seven Hills, and McClellan Estate) and combines them into a luscious fruit-filled cabernet.
A pretty, moderately aromatic nose with mocha, licorice, and earth. On the palate, a rich, voluptuous wine with a silky mouthfeel and an extremely long finish. Aged 17 months in French oak (20 percent new). Pepper Bridge, Seven Hills, and McClellan Estate vineyards. 14.1 percent alcohol. 575 cases produced
Wine & Spirits, August 2010: Château Val Joanis Rosé 2009. "88 pts - Best Buy. This lives up to its light, bright peach hue with its clarity and freshness. A thirst-quenching limey acidity enlivens the cherry fruit; herbal and mineral notes keep it firmly in the savory realm. It's a versatile rosé for sipping on its own or with a wild asparagus omelet."
Wine Spectator: DOMAINE DE COURON Côtes du Rhône-Villages White 2009. "Bright and bracing, with fresh pippin apple, lime, mineral and floral notes that are light but persistent, with good cut through the lengthy finish. Drink now. 250 cases made."
Wine of The Day, August 24, 2010 and 92 points in August 30, 2010 issue of The Wine Spectator: Baer 2007 Columbia Valley Ursa: "Supple, generous, focused and appealing for its layers of cherry, raspberry, tobacco and spice flavors, lingering easily on the polished finish. Delivers depth and distinction. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2015. 997 cases made."
91 points in August 30, 2010 issue of The Wine Spectator: Baer 2007 Columbia Valley Arctos: "Supple, refined and beautifully focused, playing its cherry, raspberry, currant and fallen leaf aromas and flavors on a sleek frame, allowing the finish to roll on easily. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Drink now through 2017. 267 cases made."

easy finds: Argentina Red
FINCA & BODEGA CARLOS PULENTA Malbec Mendoza Tomero 2008
Score: 89 points
Vivacious loganberry and linzer torte flavors course through this juicy, medium-weight Malbec, with spice and sweet toast gently framing the finish. Drink now. 12,000 cases made.
also FINCA & BODEGA CARLOS PULENTA Malbec Mendoza Árido 2008
Score: 85 points
Quite juicy, with jammy plum and blackberry fruit kept lively by almost piquant acidity that keeps the finish bouncing along. Try with barbecue ribs. Drink now. 15,000 cases made
Wine Advocate 90 points: Terredora di Paolo 2009 Falanghina
"The 2009 Falanghina is a gorgeous white endowed with surprising richness in its almost tropical expression of fruit. Signature Falanghina aromatics emerge in the glass, adding further complexity to this generous and utterly engaging white. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012.
These new releases from Terredora are among the most impressive I tasted. From top to bottom these are serious wines readers will not want to miss. The 2009 whites, all of which are aged in steel, reflect the rich, generous style of the vintage..."
Found online in winespectator.com top values: California Chardonnay $25 or less lists MOUNT EDEN Chardonnay Arroyo Seco 2008, "Combines rich, smoky, creamy fig, melon and hazelnut flavors. Full-bodied, complex and subtle, ending with a clean mix of fruit and light oak. Drink now through 2014."
also, top values: California Zinfandel $25 or less
lists RUTHERFORD RANCH Zinfandel Napa Valley 2007, "Modest in structure, but appealing for its cherry and herb aromas and zesty but rustic plum and spice flavors. Drink now."
Wine Advocate 94 points: Torbreck 2007 The Descendant: "The 2007 Descendant is composed of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier sourced from a single vineyard. Super-fragrant with a floral lift from the Viognier component, it gives up exotic scents of smoke, bacon fat, Asian spices, and wild blueberry. Voluptuous on the palate with loads of succulent fruit (a rarity in this challenging vintage), it has impeccable balance and 4-6 years of aging potential. It will be at its best from 2013 to 2027. "
94 points and Editor’s Choice to Quady Winery’s NV Batch 88 Starboard in The Wine Enthusiast: "Made from traditional Portuguese varieties, this is one of the best California Port-style wines out there, which is no surprise coming as it does from sweet wine specialist Quady. It’s tremendously rich and sweet in chocolate truffle and blackberry-infused flavors, with near-perfect acidity and tannins for balance. A great success at a good price for a full, not a half, bottle."
